On the first day of class, Dessie Gipson sits at the front of the lecture room, head bent over the notebook in front of her, tapping her pen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students shuffling in assume the woman with the pixie cut and crisp blazer must be the professor. Gipson, however, is preparing not to teach but to learn \u2014 reviewing notes she took while studying library books over the summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond succeeding in her classes, the 78-year-old San Jacinto College student wants to finish college\u00a0to become a counselor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deferred dream<\/span><\/h3>\n

Gipson and her eight siblings grew up in Houston\u2019s Fifth Ward, raised by a single mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Working\u00a0two jobs to support them, their mother showed the value of dedication and sacrifice. Praying for their safety each morning, she emphasized the importance of faith.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An eighth-grade graduate who married at 15, she encouraged her kids to pursue a better future for themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother always instilled in us the importance of education,\u201d Gipson said.<\/span><\/p>\n

After graduating high school, Gipson attended Texas Southern University part time while working, but classes soon gave way to wedding bells and babies.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn the back of my mind, though, I always wanted to pursue my education,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

New beginning<\/span><\/h3>\n

Marriage, four children, and all the responsibilities that went with both delayed college. Gipson worked in several fields, ending as an elementary special needs resource paraprofessional. Throughout the years, she watched her siblings and younger relatives earn degrees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, at 75, Gipson retired \u2026 sort of. With more time, she\u00a0felt her dream was finally within reach.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going to sit at home and watch TV all day like a couch potato,\u201d she told her husband.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After reading in San Jac\u2019s Senior Focus magazine about a tuition waiver for seniors, she enrolled at the North Campus in fall 2025, determined\u00a0to earn the degree she\u2019d been dreaming about for years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Determined return<\/span><\/h3>\n

Initially, Gipson felt like \u201ca fish out of water,\u201d but she soon found her rhythm on campus. It started with what she does best: greeting everyone she meets with a smile and a hug.<\/span><\/p>\n

To younger classmates, she\u2019s the caring, tough-loving mother figure who reminds them to focus and apply themselves rather than dozing in class or scrolling on their phones.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou have a purpose,\u201d she tells them. \u201cYou can better yourself!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even with her sunny attitude, Gipson admits some classes have daunted her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMath is not my friend,\u201d she said, laughing.<\/span><\/p>\n

As with any other challenge, though, she finds a way, like requesting the professor\u2019s permission to sit through the next section of the same class to absorb the content better.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of\u00a0class hours,\u00a0Gipson\u00a0camps out\u00a0in San Jac\u2019s tutoring center, then drives home to study more.\u00a0To support her, her husband has shouldered many household tasks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Returning to school has been rewarding, but it hasn\u2019t been easy.\u00a0Health challenges have sent her to the hospital several times, yet she\u2019s missed only one day of class since she started.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to encouraging tutors and professors, she has remained on the dean\u2019s list.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing God and I can\u2019t handle together,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fulfilled purpose<\/span><\/h3>\n

Seventy years ago, Gipson\u2019s mother, Lucille Andrews, had a dream for her family. Today, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren include doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers, nurses, and principals.\u00a0Soon, Gipson will be adding to that legacy her own new title: counselor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After earning her associate degree in May 2027,<\/span> she plans to pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree in counseling next.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is she doing this? Not for a diploma. Not to stay busy. But for a purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to counsel kids who have been abused, neglected \u2014 the kids no one is listening to,\u201d she said. \u201cThey have something to say. They have a purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019s achieving her purpose to help others achieve theirs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSuccess is never giving up on your goals and dreams,\u201d she said. \u201cLearning has no age or expiration date.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
